GLOSSARY OF INTERNET TERMS

Ready for a new vocabulary? The Doctor has run into many frustrated Internet Hypochondriacs - people who will blame their computer, their ISP, or their Server due to their lack of understanding. You will not acquire information by osmosis - read and learn! Also visit the Doctor's Newbie Ward.

ACRONYMS:

Abbreviations of commonly used phrases as used in email. Acronyms are not an excuse to not spell out words or to type cryptically. There is a time and place for their use and they should be used sparingly and only when appropriate (i.e. not in your resume). Below are some typical acronyms you will encounter in your online communications. Also visit the Doctor's Emoticon Ward.

EMOTICONS:

A figure created in email using the symbols on the keyboard. Read with the head tilted to the left. Used to convey the spirit in which a line of text is typed. With email you will communicate with people who may not know you; they can't see your facial expressions or body language. This can lend itself to the occasional misunderstanding. Also known as Smileys these symbols will help others know where you are coming from and to make the intent of your typed comments clear. If you don't use Emoticons and your email is misunderstood - it is your own fault. Also visit the Doctor's Acronym Ward.

NEWBIES

A derogatory term on the Net meaning an inexperienced and obnoxious new user. The term refers to the brand of user who is unschooled in the Internet's traditions, takes little time to learn them, and acts rudely. To avoid receiving flames from other Netizens, read on . . .
